Researching ancestors often feels like putting together a jigsaw puzzle where half the pieces are missing and the box lid is gone. Today, I’m focusing on my 4th great-grandfather, John McKinley, a man whose life spanned the birth of the United States but whose origins remain a mystery.
Here is a summary of what I know and the vital “missing pieces” I am still searching for.
What I Know
Thanks to surviving probate records and census data, I have a solid framework for John’s later life in Indiana:
- Timeline: John was born circa 1755–1760. While the 1840 Census specifically places him in the 80–90 age bracket, this birth window aligns with his later life events. He passed away on May 14, 1845, in Sullivan County, Indiana. This date is corroborated by probate documents naming Ezekiel McGarvey as the administrator of his estate.
- I have firm evidence of his residency in Nelson County, Kentucky, in 1815 and 1817. Marriage records for his children, David and Mary ‘Polly,’ explicitly name John as their father. In Polly’s 1817 bond to James Russell, David McKinley provided an oath confirming her age and her relationship to John. “Between the above named James Russell, son of William Russell and Miss Polly McKinley daughter of John McKinley the age of said Polly being proved by the oath of David McKinley her brother to be over 21 years.”
- The Migration: It is believed John moved his family to Sullivan County around 1826, based on his son David’s obituary in the Sullivan Democrat.
- A Tight-Knit Family: The 1840 Census shows the McKinley clan living in close proximity. John (then aged 80–90) lived just doors away from his son David McKinley, while his son Thomas and grandson John D. McKinley were also nearby.
- His Heirs: While a courthouse fire in 1850 destroyed many local records, a surviving Probate Estate Case File (settled in 1853) luckily names some of his children:
- David McKinley (married Elizabeth Russell)
- Mary “Polly” McKinley (married James Russell in Kentucky, 1817)
- Nancy McKinley (married Andrew McGarvey)
- Thomas McKinley
- James McKinley
The Missing Pieces
While the end of John’s story is documented in Sullivan County, the beginning remains a “brick wall.” I am currently looking for:
- His Birthplace and Parentage: We know he was born around 1755-1760, but we don’t know where. Was he an immigrant, or was he born in the colonies?
- The Name of His Wife: John’s wife is not mentioned in the 1853 estate settlement, suggesting she predeceased him. Because of the 1850 fire that destroyed the Sullivan County Courthouse, her name remains unknown.
- The Kentucky Connection: His daughter Mary was married in Kentucky in 1817 and his son David McKinley was married in Kentucky in 1815. This suggests the family lived in Kentucky before moving to Indiana. Finding John in Kentucky tax lists or land records prior to 1826 is a top priority.
- Burial Location: I suspect he may be buried at Shepherd Cemetery in Carlisle, Indiana, but there is currently no headstone or record to confirm this.
Can You Help?
Are you researching McKinleys in Kentucky or Indiana? We are particularly interested in any DNA matches or documents that might link this John McKinley to the McKinleys of Pennsylvania or Virginia. I am exploring potential ties to McKinley families in Pennsylvania and Virginia, as many families followed those migration trails into Kentucky during the late 18th century.
